Kindling

After three months of waiting and distractions, tomorrow I fly back east to reunite with the husband for four days. Four days! And then a worst-case scenario of six weeks before we reunite yet again for a friend's wedding. For three days! Butters will come along at least and make me happy-go-lucky by osmosis. This time, 11 are coming along. A support network for the ages yet a little daunting when it comes to planning, entertaining, and catching up for lost time. But every time I get stingy, I think, every single one of those people made Cary possible, made my huge hope possible, and made him, him. A patriot. The gratitude has a bottom you never hear anything hit.

But forget Cary for a second. Back east! Boston, Providence, Newport! I've only taken a whirlwind trip in junior high through Philly, D.C., and New York. Brown and Harvard Square and watching crew boats on the Charles River, and now a sprawling military base with a 360 degree view of Atlantic bays. Mild weather, traipsing around like we're back in Europe, and, back to Cary, feeling like we just met at Newbold all over again. I'm thrilled at the thought of this recapturing. Goosebumps, infatuation. It's all back, baby.

On the vainer side of things, I'm really excited to don the new hat and messenger bag I recently purchased, as well as a pair of broken-in Addidas Samba sneakers ($12 on Ebay! Hey, they look germ free). What is it about trips and events that court shopping? Why is it that ceremonies and planes, trains, and automobiles evoke images of living and laughing and walking and enjoying, clad in newly thought of items? Well, pictures are a good reason, I suppose. And confidence, my mom would say. I agree. It's nice to feel attractive and fresh with only a suitcase of choices and maybe being a bit out of the zone. The rub is that I often like what's in my closet more than what's on the racks (especially when you're looking for something specific like a dress for graduation that keeps you warm yet curvy rather than cute for the husband that likes this--FYI, this is impossible.) And then of course when I'm actually staring at my closet in the morning, there's not a thing to wear. I'm not such a girl though; Cary does this too. Seriously. In fact, I'm beginning to feel guilty that my closet has grown nicely while Cary's has remained stagnant except for dress whites and dress blues and a poopie suit (yes, they actually call it this).

But I've put in my time at the office. Speaking of which, someone moved into a new office this week. Instead of being in a hole where cell phones go to die, in the very center of the marketing writers, I am now on the outer rim, the interior of the outer hall, receiving light from the outside world from across the way. Next stop, the moon.

So bon voyage for now, sweet office. Stories and pictures will ensue. (And I'm not blogging from the office but taking a break from the Sophie's Choice of graduation dresses by the way.)

And is it just me, or were there too many parenthetical phrases in this post?

Ride

Lil' bro-in-law and I are discovering the joy of bike riding. Road cycling. Bicycling. Whatever. The peacefulness of finding a good cycling partner, a breathing rhythm, the right equipment, the view at the top after a climb, the perfect temperature breeze as you speed down a hill at dusk toward that clean, surprising beauty of a Mormon temple--the peacefulness is just right, the scales of energy and relaxation balancing just right. The air is oranges. And the slightly dangerous at dusk fact that your husband took your reflectors off your bike because he says they're nerdy doesn't matter. It's pot on two wheels. Well, there are times when I want to hurl, but that's the balance there, see.

On the trip below, earlier this week, we got lost, missed the turnoff to East Sunset and had to traipse around Yucaipa to get back to Redlands, and then had to get a lift a few miles out from Redlands because I blew a tire and had not yet stocked up on gear for that let alone know how to actually execute solving the problem.

But don't worry, I have it all packed away and down pat now.

Such Great Heights

This last weekend another race came to fruition. It's always slightly surreal when I have to go do a run, or triathlon, or hike, or some sort of physical activity I signed up for online in a haze of enthusiasm. It's a mix of anxiousness, thrill, pride, and sleepiness. It's sour/sweet candy that always ends sweet. Why do I doubt?

So yesterday, longtime childhood buddy bud Tiff and I absentmindedly joined the jog/walk group instead of the run group. I mean, run? Like sprint the entire time? If they have a jogging option that must be where we fit in since we're not professionals and want to be able to stop for pictures atop the the San Diego Bay Bridge that leads to the idyllic island of Coronado... I also like to call this magical isle adult Disneyland and prance around like I'm Dorothy in Oz. Whatever your inspiration, L. Frank Baum, it fits.

We were stuck. Caught between zillions of walkers. Who were all these people? Go back to your couches, America! Let me have some room to run without feeling like I'm doing the annual PE obstacle course test. You're only burning like eight calories every half mile. At least make it count. You came all the way out here! Ope, but wait, not too fast, I don't want to feel slow myself...

Once we relaxed into the walking lifestyle, and began burning by chattering about military life (a real Navy SEAL bride joined us on our jaunt, and Tiff is a Navy wife herself), before we knew it we were walking at a sharp slant, angling up the bridge onramp to begin our climb to the pinnacle, a spot breath-cathingly high even for daredevils, and prime real estate for suicide seekers.

How I Read 53 Books in 2009 and What it Taught Me About Reading

Inspired by Nick Cernis’s “Read One Book a Week” challenge, in the new year of 2009 I decided to give it a go: one book every week, 52 books between January 1st and December 31st.

Growing up, I was the kid who couldn’t let go of his book even for dinner, and since then I have spent many nights finishing mysteries that just had to be solved before falling to sleep. But this challenge meant switching to a whole new gear: I now had a goal to read more books in year than ever before. With a two-year old to take care of.

Why Read This Many Books?

You can easily find a handful (and more) reasons why this goal would not work for you: You have a busy schedule. You have kids. You have to cook for your family. You are a slow reader. You do sports every day.

I won’t blame you: the goal does seem unreachable at first.

But it just might make sense to give it a shot anyway: completing the goal feels great, but this is also a goal where even a failure can be a life-changing success. Say, you finish the year with only 30 books read? That’s already much above the average number of books people read per year! And even if you end up finishing just 20, the odds are that you have found yourself a great source of inspiration and happiness for years to come. You will never view books the same way as before.

How to Read 53 Books in a Year

It’s simple: aim for 52, then fail to count the books. In fact, until I started writing this blog post, I had no idea that I had read more than 52 book last year!

But how do you read 52 books then?
  1. Use every free moment you find: You’ll be surprised how often such moments arise if you always carry a book with you. For me, by far the most important time for reading was my daily 45 minute bus commute to work. I have also been found reading while waiting in line at the grocery store as well as while brushing my teeth.
  2. You don’t have to finish one book before picking up another one: I believe this is the number one secret to completing many books in a short time. It’s so easy to get stuck with a book that you don’t want to give up completely but still don’t have the inspiration to read right now. If you stick with that book, you will just drain your motivation and make reading feel like work. But if you let the book rest and read something else for a while, you might soon notice that when you return to the book you started from, it will be a better time for reading it!
  3. Pick books you are interested in: Don’t read books just because some people list them must-read.
  4. Don’t be afraid to give up on a book and move on to the next: The world is full of great books and there are more coming out every day. There is no way you can read all the good books out there, so if a book doesn’t feel worth reading, move on. But because you are reading for a goal, don’t trash the book just yet. Let it rest for a while, it might be that you want to get back to it. Don’t worry If you don’t, but if you do, it means less pages to read to make the 52 books.
  5. Pick short books every now and then: Not all the time, but if it looks like you’re falling behind, there is nothing wrong in picking a 120 page story. It’s still a book, and many of the classics aren’t that long at all. Henry Thoreau’s Walking has only 60 pages!
  6. Check out audio books: In my 53 books, I decided to not include e-books. You can decide differently, there are many good e-books out there and you set the rules for your own goals. Audio books, on the other hand, were within the arbitrary limits I set for myself in this project. What’s good about audio books is that you can listen to them while doing something else. In general, multitasking isn’t a good idea and I wouldn’t replace my daily dose of reading books with listening to them, but I found that listening to books while running works for me pretty well.
  7. Have fun! Read all kinds of books. Mix fiction with non-fiction and humor with more serious prose. Remember that you are reading for yourself and not to please your old English teacher.

Minimalism, and the Art of Reading Slower

Reading 53 books in a year was a great experience: I got tons of ideas, educated myself tremendously, and had a lot of fun. It is no surprise that the first thought as I closed my last book of 2009 was: “Next year, 100 books!” That’s how addictive numbers are. There is always a bigger number to reach for.
But after the initial excitement faded, I started to think about the meaning of reading: Do I really want to  read just to reach a high number? My answer was no. In my quest to complete 52 books, I realized, I had read some books more quickly than I should have, without stopping to let them change me, and just reading them as books rather than big ideas that should be put into practice.

So now, I’m rereading those books from last year’s list. Slower, with a pen in a hand, trying to really understand what goes on inside the author’s mind, what he has to say to me, and how I can make the most out of that message. This year, most likely I won’t reach the 52 books mark. I could do it if I wanted to, and I guess I will get close, but I decide to take more time and let the words challenge me.


Do it Anyway!

In the long run, it is better to read books at your own pace than to count numbers. But even so, the 52 books in a year challenge is a great way to kickstart your reading. If you start today, in a year from now, you will have collected a nice set of new thoughts, quotes and interesting stories to build on! Not to mention the ever growing list of books you want to read next.

From there, you just keep reading as many books as feels natural for you.
